AutomationML Editor
The AutomationML Editor is an ideal starting point for learning, experimenting and understanding AutomationML. It offers powerful functions for creating, visualizing, documenting, manipulating and downloading available external AutomationML libraries.
The editor focuses on modeling object worlds with CAEX and referencing external files. The modeling of geometries and behavior descriptions are not part of the editor.
The AutomationML Editor is developed and provided by AutomationML e.V. to make essential AutomationML concepts practically tangible. Over the years and thanks to the support of our members and a passionate community, it has evolved into a powerful tool with a comprehensive plugin architecture that allows it to be extended with new features that might tempt some to use it professionally. For commercial use or as an industrial development tool, it was not designed and does not represent the entire modeling scope of AutomationML. Please note the license conditions before use!

The latest version – AutomationML version 6.4
The latest version, developed by the AutomationML Association, provides new functions for the first time that open up new possibilities for semantic modeling. In addition, a new license model allows a wider user community to use the editor as a full version without having to be a member. Further information can be found below. For information on service releases, please check the news section regularly. You will find the relevant information there.
What’s new?
With the innovative AutomationML ID concept, we now enable global access to semantic libraries, revolutionizing the world of automation. Through a state-of-the-art publication mechanism, AutomationML libraries can be systematically reviewed, published, and versioned. Additionally, online search functionalities make libraries and classes globally discoverable and accessible on servers worldwide.
These new capabilities mark a significant milestone in the evolution of AutomationML. We are leveraging the foundation for semantic modeling of complex systems, contributing to standardization and digitalization of the exchange of engineering data in industry.
Accessible to Everyone – Free Version and Flexible Licensing
For the first time, the AutomationML Editor is available independently of AutomationML membership.
- Free Version: Completely free for everyone, perfect for getting started with AutomationML.
- Licensing Models: Flexible options to unlock advanced features without requiring membership – allowing even non-members to fully leverage the power of the AML Editor.
- Special benefits for the academic community: Tailored conditions make the Premium version highly affordable for research and education.

Good to know
The AutomationML Editor remains free of charge and available to everyone but introduces some restrictions in the size of AutomationML models or the use of some features. The size restrictions are generous and do not affect its applicability for most educational and didactical purposes. In addition, the new license model now offers the option of expanding the scope as required in accordance with the table above without having to become a member.
The licenses listed are annual licenses, without automatic renewal and associated costs. The license will be issued for one year after receipt of payment following the order and invoicing process and made available via email or link as a .lic file.
Special conditions for academia: For a one-time fee of 750€, academic institutions, which are not profit-oriented, receive a premium license for one year, with an unlimited number of users, to make it available for an unlimited amount of students and scientists belonging to the academic institution. It is also possible to obtain licenses for the duration of research projects for a one-off payment. Please contact our office if you have any questions or require a quote (office@automationml.org).
Regardless of the license type, there is still the option of obtaining a one-off test license for a period of one month up to a maximum of three months free of charge for testing purposes. The total duration is bound to the organization. This means that if several users from one organization request a test licence, no further licences will be issued once the total duration has been reached. Deviations from this are possible at the discretion of the General Assembly or by resolution of the Board of Directors.
The latest version will be available for download from February 01, 2025. Online events are also planned to present the new functions and will be teased here on the website – stay tuned and check back occasionally under News!
Have fun modeling with AutomationML!
