At the SPS/IPC/Drives 2016 in Nuremberg AutomationML e.V. had established a liaison with the FDT Group. Board members of AutomationML e.V. had signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to confirm the collaboration.

In March 2016, the first result of the liaison of AutomationML e.V. and OPC Foundation was published: the whitepaper "OPC Unified Architecture Information Model for AutomationML". Now, nine month later, this whitepaper had become DIN SPEC 16592 "Combining OPC Unified Architecture and Automation Markup Language".
