Study on automation engineering with the Asset Administration Shell (AAS)

The recently discussed and widely agreed integration of Industry 4.0 technologies like AAS, OPC UA and AutomationML within a common framework for information management along the complete lifecycle of a technical system, see „Diskussionspapier“ is now showing first applications.

A recent study by ABB, the result of a successful collaboration with Equinor, shows what can be achieved by integrating MTP based system element models of process industry within AAS and other technologies. MTP as modelling standard following VDI/VDE/NAMUR-Guideline 2658 is based on AutomationML and its AAS integration approach follows the AutomationML Application Recommendation AutomationML in Asset Administration Shells.

Among other things, the ABB study describes how an existing engineering workflow is captured and can be improved with a digital twin and shows an infrastructure with which three different organizations can exchange information.

We are delighted that ABB and Equinor have created and shared this study. An excellent example of engineering data integration and a practical use case for some published documents mentioned above.
